SP Codecs Requirements
Basic Principles :
- An audio file to be streamed with SP must be encoded using vorbis and its extension must be .ogg.
- A video file to be streamed with SP must be encoded using an Mpeg-4 codec : DivX®, XviD, 3ivX, Sigma, RMP4 etc. The audio stream of a video must be encoded in Ogg Vorbis and the video + the audio must be encapsulated as an ogm.
- In any case, the encapsulation to be used is the ogg encapsulation.

Audio :
StreamPlug® only supports one audio codec at the current stage : Ogg Vorbis . An audio file must be encoded with Vorbis to be used with SP.
Ogg Vorbis was chosen for several reasons : it is a free codec, under GNU license, as opposed to Mp3 which requires a license and Ogg Vorbis has significant advantages quality wise.
You can get information and tools about Ogg Vorbis here.
Video :
StreamPlug® is an Mpeg-4 player. As such, it is compatible with all the codecs compliant with the Mpeg-4 standard. A video file must therefore be encoded using one of the mpeg-4 codecs, such as : DivX®, XviD, 3ivX, RMP4, Sigma, etc. The choice of the exact codec to use is up to you and should depend on your goal. For more information about the specificities of each codec, we recommend you to read the codec comparisons offered by doom9.org .
In general, XviD is the codec that should be favoured. Alike Ogg Vorbis, it is a free codec and is technically superior in almost all cases.
Encapsulation :
StreamPlug® uses the .OGM / .OGG container. You cannot stream a *.avi or a *.wmv or a *.rm with SP.

encoding techniques and software to use, please refer to the encoding section.
